Memphis Symphony Orchestra at Cannon Center

Memphis SymphonyCannon Center for the Performing Arts
15 Sep 2007 - 10 May 2008 (annual)

The Memphis Symphony Orchestra and music director David Loebel present the annual season at Cannon Center with one major programme a month, plus chamber, family and special concerts. There are also al fresco concerts in the Dixon Gallery and Gardens at the end of the season.

The 2007/2008 season opens with Peter Serkin, America's top piano soloist, performing Brahms' second piano concerto. Pieces by Tchaikovsky, Mozart and Bruckner are programmed into the masterworks series and the Paul and Linnea Bert Chamber Series.

In addition there are Bank of America Pops Series, with popular programmes running throughout the year, and family concerts.

Starting as the Memphis Sinfonietta, the orchestra was renamed the Memphis Symphony in 1960 and, in 1984, the orchestra's founder and conductor emeritus Vincent de Frank retired after 32 years. After Alan Balter's 14 years as music director, David Loebel became only the third music director in the orchestra's history in 1999. The Memphis Symphony Orchestra celebrated its 50th anniversary on 25 January 2003 with a special concert and a move to its new home, the Memphis Cook Convention Center's new Cannon Center for the Performing Arts.

The Cannon Center and Memphis Symphony Orchestra websites provide full details of this year's programmes and dates.
